How To Build a Website: Part 1
When most people think of a website, they think (a-dot-com), so I will take a simplistic approach to walk you through the specifics of what consists of a website and how to get one going.
You will need a:
- Domain Registrar (domain.com, godaddy.com, networksolutions.com, etc)
- Domain Name (a-dot-com)
- Code/Markup/Database (your website content)
- Hosting Provider (the place where you store your website content)
Those are the basic requirements to build your own website. You do not necessarily need to know how to write code, how to create a database or how to write up markup. There are plenty of solutions available to you to choose from that are free and open source to take care of all of that.
There are 2 basic re-occurring costs associated with a website. Your domain registrar at approximately $10/year and your hosting provider which varies greatly. I wouldn’t go over $5/month unless you know what you are paying for. There are a couple hundred domain registrars and thousands of hosting providers. I will go in to how you should choose and keep it simple of what I would recommend.
Domain Registrar
Why do I need a domain registrar? You need this if you want to easily control which hosting company your domain points to. While it doesn’t matter too much which registrar you sign up with, I would just stick with a big name such as what I listed above (domain.com, godaddy.com or networksolutions.com)
Domain Name
Once you have chosen a domain registrar to go with, you can now buy a domain name that is available. If you already have one, then you will need to know to find your registrar. Technically you do not need a domain name, but it would be hard for people to find your website without one.
Code/Markup/Database
The content of your website is going to dictate the direction from here on out. In this example, I am going to just assume you want to setup a WordPress website and/or setup a phpBB forum. In this case, your code, markup and database would be already designed and all you would need to do is find a proper hosting provider. If you are looking to build an eCommerce site or something else, then this is far as I am going to go to explain how to setup.
Hosting Provider
As I mentioned earlier, there are a ton of hosting providers. Don’t go too far into comparing hosting companies for every feature they do and do not have. In future articles, I will go in depth with how to setup WordPress and phpBB and go over the requirements of each.
Photo Albums
Photo Albums are now available. It is amazing how easy it is to setup WordPress and configure it to your liking. I adjusted the font colors and size to be compatible with this WordPress template. The Photo Album allows you to post comments. Right now it is password protected, so I need to think how best to keep photos secure. More to come on that.
EDIT: I will have a public photo page and a separate secure photo page.
Started Using WordPress
I never really did get used to using Facebook. I’m sure I will still use Facebook to connect to my friends occasionally, but I don’t like the idea that every post goes out to everyone. It kinda forces you to be more social than you care to be. I also like the idea to disconnect from you being the subject and focus on any subject you care to write about.
